UBC NBK Mining Co-op Program
The program consists of two 8-month and one 4-month work terms, requiring 5 years to complete instead of the conventional 4 years.
About half of our students participate in the Co-op Program. The Co-op Office places students in mining engineering-type jobs with companies around the world.

Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM)
The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Vancouver branch, ideally located in close proximity to the head offices of many major mining corporations as well as numerous junior mining companies, provides the best opportunities to regularly network with the local mining industry from world-class mine operating companies to up-and-coming mine developers, from global mining equipment suppliers to niche mining technology developers
We will continue to grow as a forum for technical presentations and networking with mining professionals. The branch will also continue to support the development of the local CIM student chapters, to engage with students and bring them into the CIM community.
Blue Evans Stewardship Report
It is fitting that the legacy of a popular professor who helped forge the professional paths of his students—and helped build the reputation of the UBC Mining department— should live on to support the careers of today’s mining engineering students.
Following a long career in the mining industry throughout Australia, Canada and the United States, John “Blue” Evans was appointed head of the Department of Mining Engineering in 1969. During his nine years at UBC, Blue proved to be a dynamic presence on campus, conferring on his students his considerable industry and technological knowledge.
“Blue was a great mentor, supporter, and role model for young adults who aspired to become engineers,” says former colleague Alf Hills. “He put so many students on a successful career trajectory.”
After Mr. Evans passed away on June 5, 2011, Alumni and friends established his legacy by creating the Blue Evans Student Support Endowment Fund. Blue’s strong leadership, experience, and camaraderie continue to provide our students with critical, career-building opportunities to interface with industry.”
